Pinellas Preparatory Academy strives to provide a creative and positive environment for emotionally mature children. Our excellent faculty shares with parents and the community the responsibility to prepare each child for secondary education and beyond.

Pinellas Preparatory Academy is a public charter school located in Largo, Florida.  While we are authorized by Pinellas County Schools, and our funding passes through the county, we are operated independently of the school district.  Charter schools were created to provide for school choice and innovation.  Pinellas Prep has been educating students since 2002, and has a strong history of providing an excellent education for our students.  Because we are operated independently of the district, we are not able to use their sub-finder system.  As a result, we call subs individually when we need someone to come in to cover classes.  We maintain our own internal database for teachers.  When a teacher needs to call in sick, they make calls to substitutes to find someone to cover for their class.  The payments are handled through the school.

Below is a list of frequently asked questions by prospective subs to help you decide if you are interested in working at our school.  If you are, please open this form by clicking here, fill it out and return it to the school as soon as you are able.  You will be added to our list for teachers to call when they need coverage.

Thank you, and if you have any additional questions that are not answered below, please feel free to call our school office at 727-536-3600.

FAQs

What are the hours?

Students in fourth through eighth grades start class at 8:00am.  Fourth and fifth graders get done at 2:40pm, and sixth through eighth grade get done at 2:50pm. We ask that subs arive no later than 7:40am to become familiar with the classroom and to review the plans for the day prior to students arriving.  Once students have left for the day and the room is in order, subs may leave.  If you are substitute teaching for our sister school, Pinellas Primary Academy, students start at 8:15am and get done at 2:30pm.

Are you a public school or private school?

We are a public school, but operated independently of the county. We are a not-for-profit agency that runs a school, and we have a contract with the school.  So long as we abide by the rules in our contract, the district gives us 95% of the money the state gives them per student to operate our school.  All decisions are made at the school by our staff. Our staff are not employed by Pinellas County, but are all certified staff members.  For the students, we are a public school in that they do not pay tuition and we meet all of the requirements of a public school. However, our atmosphere feels much more like a private school then a public.

When do we get paid? By whom?

Payments are made to substitute teachers directly by our school.  We typically pay our substitutes the same day they work, just pick up your check at the end of the day from the office.  In the unlikely event that there are extenuating circumstances and prevent us from printing your check the same day, it will be mailed to you as soon as possible. We hire substites as "independent contractors", meaning taxes are not withheld from your pay. If you earn more than $600 from the school in any calendar year, you will be issued a form 1099 listing the income.  As independent contractors, substitutes are responsible for their own tax liability.

How much do you pay?

For typical subbing assignments, we pay $80 per day.  We do go up to $120 per day for long term (more than 10 day) assignments. If it is only half a day, the payment is $40.

Are you a high priority subbing placement school?

This is a county designation. Because we are not a county school, this does not apply to us.  We pay $80 per day for substitute teachers.

What grades do you have?

We have students in grades 4 through 8. Our younger students are separated for most of the day from the older students. We also operate a sister school on the same property, Pinellas Primary Academy, which as students in Kindergarten through third grade.

How do I get to your school?

If you do not know where you are looking, our school can be hard to find. Click here for a Google Map.  We are located right near the corner of Ulmerton and Belcher behind the CVS and McDonald's.

What kind of students do you serve?

Our school was established for creative children who are motivated to learn and do well in school.  We tend to cater towards bright students who apply themselves and work hard in school. There is a perception by some people that charter schools are for the "bad" kids, and this is not true.  We are extremely proud of our students, and they do a great job. That said, however, substitutes do still need to have classroom management skills and realize that while they are exceptional students, they still are middle school students.

How do I apply?

If you are a substitute for Pinellas County, all we require is our substitute information form and a copy of your Pinellas County Substitute ID.

If you are not a substitute for Pinellas County, you will need to undergo a level-2 background check through the school district.  You will need to pay for the finger printing associated with that check, which is approximately $63.50.  Once the finger prints are cleared we would need you to complete the substitute information form as well.

What are the requirements for subbing?

We prefer credentialed teachers as substitutes whenever possible. Retired teachers, recently graduated education students, etc. tend to make excellent substitute teachers.

Minimum education requirements for substitutes is an associate's degree and demonstrated experience with children.

When will I be contacted about a subbing position?

This will vary depending on the assignment. Teachers usually call for their own sub when they know they will need one. Most teachers try to plan ahead.  Teachers are given 10 PTO (Paid Time Off) days per year that they can use as sick or personal time. We prefer the teachers plan their absences ahead of time so that subs can be contacted earlier. In these cases, substitutes can be arranged days or weeks ahead of time.  If the teacher or their child is ill the morning of work, they usually start calling for subs around 6:00am and we keep calling until someone is found.

Will I be provided with lesson plans?

Yes. Most of our teachers will email plans in the morning of if they are sick, or leave plans out if it is a planned absence. In addition, 'emergency plans' are required to be turned into the office so that they can be provided to subs if necessary.

Can I decide when I will be coming in to sub?

On the substitute information form you can indicate when you prefer to sub.  We try to make sure the teachers know this so they don't call you for assignments you would not be available for.  If you receive a call and are unavailable, you can simply decline that assignment.
